Wagon Wheel is a semi-firm organic cow's milk cheese from Cowgirl Creamery in Point Reyes Station, California. Made with milk from nearby North Bay dairies, it's aged a couple of months in the Petaluma caves, just long enough to develop a thin natural rind and a supple pressed paste.
The paste is smooth and pliable, slicing cleanly under the knife with a buttery, almost creamline mouthfeel. Flavors lean gentle and milky, fresh cream and sweet butter on the front, a quiet toasted hazelnut note through the middle, and a soft, clean finish. It melts beautifully, which is why it earned its name and its reputation as one of Cowgirl's most versatile everyday wheels.
This is the cheese to keep on hand when you want something approachable that still tastes like real farmhouse milk. Just because it's mild doesn't mean it's not flavorful.
Semi-firm and pliable, slices cleanly without crumbling, with a smooth pressed paste that has just enough give to feel almost buttery on the tongue.
Gentle and approachable, a mellow buttery cow's milk cheese with a light savory pull rather than any sharp edge.
Clean and quick, the buttery cream note fades within a few seconds, leaving a soft milky sweetness behind.
Fresh cream and sweet butter run right through the paste, a hallmark of the local organic North Bay milk Cowgirl sources.
A quiet toasted hazelnut note develops in the middle, gentle rather than pronounced, in keeping with the young age.
A faint hint of hay and cellar from the natural rind, but the paste itself stays clean and milky.
No pepper or piquant bite, this is a mellow melting-style wheel built for approachability.
Natural rind
Thin natural rind picks up a soft earthy, hay-like note from the cave. Edible but understated, most of the character lives in the paste.
Wagon Wheel stands on its own, but the right partners turn a wedge into a moment. Regional pairings first — they were built for each other.

The mellow buttery paste stays out of the way of a lighter red like Pinot Noir, while a lightly oaked Chardonnay or a farmhouse saison echoes the fresh cream and gentle savory pull.

A mellow melting cheese wants sweet fruit acidity and a touch of honey to lift the cream, and it stands up beautifully to mustard on a ham sandwich.

Absolutely loved the cheese store! Everyone was super helpful and friendly. Lena helped us — she was very knowledgeable on all the cheeses: where they came from, what the region is like, what they are known for. It was like wine tasting for cheese.
Ordered several cheeses from them and the wrong items were delivered. Contacted the store and they recognized the error and immediately sent the correct order the next day without any fuss. Really appreciate the promptness and professionalism.
