Sassicaia, a renowned Italian wine, translates to "the place of many stones" or "stony ground" in the local Tuscan dialect. This name reflects the gravelly, stony soil of the vineyard where the wine is produced by Tenuta San Guido in Bolgheri, Tuscany. The name is derived from the Italian word "sasso," meaning stone.
The history of Sassicaia is intertwined with the vision of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who sought to create a wine in the style of Bordeaux in Tuscany. He recognized the suitability of the stony terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes, which were not traditionally grown in the region. The first commercial vintage of Sassicaia was released in 1968, and it quickly gained recognition as a Super Tuscan wine, eventually leading to the establishment of the Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC.
