Domaine Labbé was founded in 1975 by two brothers in the Savoie, the Alpine corner of eastern France about 15 kilometers south of Chambéry. In 2004 their children, the cousins Alexandra and Jérôme Labbé, took over the family's 10 hectares of vines, and they farm them sustainably today. The vineyards sit at the foot of Mont Granier on one of the most dramatic terroirs in France. In 1248 a huge section of the mountain collapsed and spread rock and rubble across the valley floor. The cru takes its name from that event: "Abymes" comes from the old French for "ruined," a nod to the broken limestone the vines now grow in. Here the Labbés grow Jacquère, the Savoie's own white grape. They ferment it with native yeasts in neutral tanks and large casks so nothing hides its crisp, mountain-fresh character. The result is a bright, light-bodied white with a cool mineral edge that tastes of the Alps. Pour it the way the Savoyards do, with a bubbling fondue savoyarde, a wedge of Beaufort or Tomme de Savoie, or a fresh lake fish.
