Domaine François Raveneau is widely considered the greatest name in Chablis. François Raveneau founded the estate in 1948, combining vines he bought with those of his wife’s family, the Dauvissats, and became the first in his family to bottle his own wine. His sons Jean-Marie and Bernard carried the domaine to legendary status. Today it is run by the third generation, cousins Isabelle and Maxime Raveneau. Maxime looks after the vineyards and Isabelle leads the cellar. Little has changed in their approach. The roughly ten hectares are harvested by hand, and the wines are fermented in stainless steel, then aged for 12 to 18 months in old barrels with no new oak, so the purity of the fruit and the voice of each site come first. Butteaux is one of three climats the family farms on the Montmains Premier Cru slope, on the left bank of the Serein. It is the highest and steepest of the three, and Raveneau’s parcel sits at the very top, where the microclimate is coolest. The vines are around 55 years old and grow in soils rich in white clay over Kimmeridgian limestone. The family calls it their most mineral Montmains wine, and it is also their densest and most powerful. The 2024 vintage was one of the most difficult in memory. Spring frost, hail, heavy rain and relentless mildew cut yields to roughly half a normal crop across Chablis. The wines that came through are charming and vibrant, with lifted citrus and floral notes and the classic smoky, saline Chablis signature. This tiny crop of Butteaux delivers the site’s intensity and stony depth in a pure, finely chiseled form.
