Domaine de la Vougeraie was started in 1999 by Jean-Charles and Nathalie Boisset, who brought together vineyard parcels their family had collected over the years across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Since 2001 the estate has been farmed biodynamically. It's certified by Demeter, and some of its vineyards are still plowed by horse. The Clos de Thorey is a walled premier cru in Nuits-Saint-Georges and a monopole, meaning Vougeraie is its only owner, so every bottle from this vineyard carries the domaine's name. It's planted entirely to Pinot Noir. The wine ferments with native yeasts and is aged in barrel with about a third new oak. 2013 was a cool, late season. A cold, wet spring pushed flowering weeks behind schedule, yields were small, and the reds were picked into October. The Côte de Nuits wines of that year are known for bright red fruit, lively acidity and moderate alcohol, all of which let each vineyard's character show. Now more than a decade on, this is a good time to open it, with roast duck, mushroom dishes or the cheeses of Burgundy.
