Domaine de la Vougeraie was founded in 1999 by Jean-Charles and Nathalie Boisset, who brought together their family's vineyards across the Côte d'Or. The estate has been farmed biodynamically since 2001. The Clos du Roi, "the King's Enclosure," is a premier cru in the northern part of Beaune. It sits on a fold in the hillside below Les Marconnets and faces southeast. The vineyard once belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy. When Charles the Bold died in 1477, it passed to King Louis XI along with the rest of the duchy, and it took the name it still carries. Its soils mix clay, sand and silt, and they hold up well in dry years. Vougeraie destems the Pinot Noir fully and moves it into tank by gravity. The wine is then aged in barrel with about a third new oak. 2012 was a difficult year in the Côte de Beaune: a hard winter freeze, a poor flowering, a wet early summer and an August hailstorm. Yields were tiny, but a sunny finish produced reds of deep concentration. More than a decade on, this bottle goes well with roast lamb, beef bourguignon or the cheeses of Burgundy.
