Danilo Thomain's 2024 Enfer d'Arvier is led by Petit Rouge, rounded out with small amounts of Pinot Noir, Gamay, and Gamaret, grown on brutally steep terraces inside a sun-trapped amphitheater above the Dora Baltea river at roughly 2,200–2,600 feet — Thomain is essentially the lone independent producer in this tiny, five-hectare Alpine appellation, with everything else going through the local co-op. Farming here is entirely manual out of necessity: the terraces are too steep for machinery, so grapes are hand-harvested and carried down the hillside by hand. The wine is fermented spontaneously in steel and fiberglass and aged in Thomain's own basement, two stories underground with no temperature control — about as artisanal and unfiltered-by-technology as winemaking gets. In the glass it's medium-bodied but energetic, with black raspberry, plum skin, wild herbs, and crushed mountain stone, backed by bright acidity and fine, gripping tannins — a wine that carries real mountain freshness without ever feeling heavy.
