The Bava family has tended vines on the steep hillsides around Cocconato, in the Monferrato Astigiano, since the 1600s, and built their first cellar there in 1911, the year their winery was formally founded. Across the generations since, Barbera has remained the family’s central passion, and Stradivario is its highest expression: the estate’s flagship, drawn from the Vigna della Pieve, the most prized vineyard in Cocconato, a site that once belonged to the local parish and sits on a gentle hill of clay and limestone soils. The name and the violin on the label honor the family’s lifelong love of music, a thread that runs through the Bava story as surely as wine does. Stradivario is made only in the strongest years and is crafted for the long haul, a deliberately age-worthy Barbera at a time when most of the region’s production was meant for early drinking. The 1999 comes from a highly regarded Piedmont vintage, and after more than a quarter century in bottle it offers a rare chance to taste what a serious Barbera becomes with patience, its bright acidity carrying the fruit into the savory, layered complexity of a fully mature wine.
