His work helped pioneer whole-cluster pressing, native-yeast fermentation, barrel lees ageing and unfiltered bottling in California Chardonnay, and since 2021 his children Claire and Alan have run the winery as co-presidents. Parts of the Russian River Valley lie within ten miles of the Pacific, and morning fog flows in through the Petaluma Gap. This bottling comes from cool, low-vigor sites on Goldridge loam, planted mostly to UC Davis Clone 4, known for its bright acidity. The clusters are pressed whole, fermented in barrel with native yeast and full malolactic, stirred on the lees, aged 12 months in French oak (about 10% new) and bottled unfiltered.
