Its story begins in the 1930s, when the grandfather of current owner Cesare Cristofaro ran a small shop in Girifalco and made his own drinks. One of them was a simple \u003cem\u003egazzosa al caffè\u003c\/em\u003e: roasted coffee infused in sparkling water and sold without a label. In the 1960s his son Salvatore opened the family's Acqua Calabria bottling plant and registered the name Brasilena, a nod to Brazil's place in coffee history. After the plant expanded in 1982, the soda reached the market in the form known today and quickly became a fixture in bars across Calabria and southern Italy. It is still made by the family business with mineral water from the springs of Monte Covello above Girifalco. Brewed coffee makes up about 12% of the drink, which is lightly sweetened and moderately carbonated. The result is a dark, refreshing soda with real coffee flavor and far less caffeine than an espresso.
